So far our first impression of New Mexico has been.... not good. It is incredibly depressed here. Almost like everyone just gave up on the place. Pretty sad and kind of disturbing. One picture still stuck in my head.... driving down the highway was a guy' s trailer/property surrounded by 6 foot chain link then prison style barbed wire 2 feet above that! You know, the kind that is coiled up with knife blade barbs. Creepy. His was one of the few pieces of property not tagged with gang graffiti. There is vandalism everywhere you look. Most of the neighborhoods are trailer park communities and the first couple of homes, entering from the highway, are always tagged up with spray paint. It appears that there may be no real garbage pickup service in these communities either. Or they just opted out. You will see bags of garbage just thrown out onto the highway outside of the neighborhoods. I guess they figure that it will eventually blow down to the next town. I've been in some poor communities before but never like this. It's the lack of pride that is the disturbing part. We've only been through the northern part of NM so far. A local told us that the southern part is really bad. How much worse can it be? Also, we haven't been traveling the interstate highways either. Just state highways through smaller towns. Maybe it will be different once we hit interstate 20. I made some comments on some of the pictures. See for yourself. Some of these pics are crappy cuz they were taken from a moving vehicle.

note: in my video posts on other entries, you might get a message saying something like "flash is required". Obviously, this is a glitch with this blog since we all have (or should have) "flash" on our computers. Just reload the page and the video should appear.

I wouldn't visit Detroit then if I were you. NM is the boomtown in comparison... Sh** that place is just a couple of nice doughboy pools shy of paradise, looks like to me!

That's pretty trippy. What was your anticipation of NM? Hopefully your next stop will be more uplifting for you all...

too bad. hope it gets better. everyone talks about how great taos is and what about santa fe? if you get a chance check out las vegas, n.m. we used to have lots of cousins there (picketts) it at a higher altitude.

Espanola is situated in a lovely panoramic valley, and this is where its charm stops. It is a town of gang-bangers, street hustlers, pan handlers and lousy drivers. It seems as though all the bad folks from Santa Fe, Los Alamos and other surrounding communities have been flushed to this toilet bowl of a city. While driving 10 miles below the speed limit through certain "cruising" sections of town ( so the folks can show off their 22" wheels they put on their hyundai) be sure to watch out for the stray dogs because they are all over the place. If you want to go to one of the most miserable wal-marts this is the one - try going there on a sunday afternoon and see how few check out lanes they have open.
