The campground in Cave Spring was fine, except for two things: Georgia Bulldogs fans and a church revival. We happened to be in camp on Saturday, and were parked directly in between a pair of good ol' Southern boys who wanted the entire World to hear how the Georgia Bulldogs were doing on the radio, and a picnic/old time church revival, complete with clapping, singing, and crying kids. I swear they were trying to outdo each other to see who could be louder. It was sort of cool to get the local vibe, but also made for a not very restful day
The next day, we drove down to the outskirts of Atlanta to have lunch with my childhood friend, Adam George. I hadn't seen Adam since high school...26 years! He looked great, and we had a great time catching up on each others' lives and meeting each others' families. I hope it's not another 26 years before we meet again!
On our way through Atlanta, we had to stop at a shopping mall to buy a thumb drive and some other things I needed for work, and we really felt like we were sticking out like a sore thumb. I think there were maybe a handful of other Caucasians in the entire mall. I certainly don't have any bias against any type of people, but it still makes you feel uncomfortable when everyone stares at you because you are different.
After driving through Atlanta, we wanted to take more back roads and get off the Interstate to see some of the real countryside. We stopped in one little town for lunch, and this town had more empty storefronts with broken windows than operating stores
Our second campground for the leg, Southern Trails in Unadilla, Georgia, had its own chapel (earlier on the drive, we had stopped at a rest stop in Alabama that had televangelists playing on a TV 24/7 for everyone to see). Hmm...Yes, Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore. We also got our first taste of the Southern humidity, which I have to say (sitting here in Orlando), we are not crazy about. I like sun, and I like it hot, but keep the humidity! I don't want to feel like I have to shower every 15 minutes.
Next up is Florida, which you will hear a lot about, as so far, we've been there for 5 weeks and counting! Stay tuned...
