On Thursday night, our Business Information Technology teacher let me and a couple friends take our Friday morning midterm early so we could catch trains starting at 545am on Friday to Prague. We went from Riva to Lugano to Zurich to Munich and then had to take a 5 hour express-bus from Munich to Prague. We had a two hour layover in Munich before the bus came, so we went one metro stop away back to Oktoberfest to walk around a for a bit and got on more rides. Then we went back for the bus, which was supposed to get us in to Prague at 8:44pm but didn't get in until 11:30. This is because we had 8 rowdy Germans drinking on the bus and being too loud. We pulled over multiple times and the bus driver called the police on them. The German police didn't do anything so we crossed into the Czech border and the police got them off the bus. We finally made it to Prague and walked around to find ATMs and our hostel. I withdrew 3,000 Czech Korunas and felt rich for a little but that is only equivalent to $150. By the time we found our Hostel Orange it was past midnight, and when we went to check in we quickly realized Tiffany booked the hostel for the wrong weekend. Luckily the hostel had free Wi-Fi and I quickly found a new hostel on my phone that was 10 minutes away. We found
our new hostel and got KFC for dinner since it was the only place still open then went back to our 8 bed hostel which we had to ourselves for the first night.
The next day we woke up late and did a free tour of Prague at 1:45. The first stop was
the Astronomical Clock which our tour guided noted was ranked as the most over-rated tourist attraction in most travel guides. But then we learned it actually had an interesting story behind
it. Prague officials burned out the eyes of the guy who made it so he couldn't make another clock anywhere else, and then cut his tongue out too so he couldn't talk about what they did to
him. So the clock maker jumped in the gears of his clock and died, breaking it for 100
years. The Astronomical Clock is on the side of the main plaza with Old Town Hall. Next we saw a music hall called the Rudolfinum. It had statues of famous composers on the roof, and our tour guide told us one of the Nazi Officials ordered his men to push the Jewish composer, Mendelssohn, off the roof, but the men couldn't figure out which one he was. So they measured the size of each of the nose's and pushed off the biggest one, who happened to be Hitler's favorite German composer, Wagner. Next we saw the Charles Bridge and the Prague Castle from afar, before heading into the Jewish quarter where we saw the Synagogues and cemetery. After we saw the Metronome that now replaces where there was a massive statue of Stalin. The swinging back and forth represents moving backwards with communism and moving forward with democracy. This ended the tour and then we got Bohemia Bagel which a lot of our friends had recommended to us. We walked around Prague a bit more and did some shopping and then went to the hostel to rest up. That night we did a Prague pub crawl, which showed us around the downtown and then ended at the largest music club in Central Europe, Karlovy Lazne, which was 5 stories tall.
The next day we decided to walk around to the other side of Prague which was across the Charles Bridge. On our way there we stopped at the Medieval Torture Museum which was very interesting and gruesome. Our next stop was the John Lennon wall, which people have now spray painted over the original drawings. After that we walked to the Prague Castle, which according to the Guinness Book of Records is the biggest ancient castle (570 meters long). It wasn't all a castle though, it was more of a collection of royal buildings. Later we got a delicious duck for dinner at a Czech restaurant. The next morning we got back on the bus early in the morning to Munich, then made it back to Riva San Vitale at midnight. Tomorrow it is off to Venice!
