Um in this day and age of speedy travel and cheap flights you do not expect it to take over 6 hours to get across the country. And after being exposed to Virgin propaganda in the cinema countless times with their boastful claims that "going by train is better than going by plane" well I'd like to make the small point that IT'S NOT TRUE!!!! Okay you have to wait an hour for a plane but at least when you're on a plane you are not likely to get the message "apologies for the delay but we cannot take off right now as we are still waiting for the Captain" or "apologies for the delay but there is a stripper on the runway." Six hours to get to Exeter - a delay at every single station but the CHEEK of Virgin does not stop there oh no. Because the train was running so late they magically turned it into the later train (thereby cancelling a train effectively) even Paul Daniels and his Debbie could not perform such miracles. Anyway enough of my rant about Virgin and about Exeter. Home of Noel Edmonds (whom our taxi driver helpfully informed us was making a TV comeback - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!), a squat cathedral, endless building sites (a la most cities these days) and one of the UK's most ugliest bus stations (Hanley bus station still holds the number 1 spot for me) you're wondering what it has to recommend it, aren't you? Well the cathedral had a very beautiful frontage, there was some bizarre public art in the centre and some ancient timbered buildings. Oh and my evening's pizza was nice.
