Wednesday 11 July
Up early to breakfast of plums on the terrace with the two families. Left and cycled round village to old wooden water mill, next to telegraph poll storks nest, then towards border past huge trees on a meadow blown over by high winds the previous week. Stopped to have a closer look and past an orchard, stopped to have a closer look. At border had to fill in visa form and into Ukraine for Hungarian monument to some battle they won. Brought map and off past fantastic bus stops (massive constructions of reinforced concrete) and soviet war memorials (massive constructions of reinforced concrete). Stopped again at interesting building and Lehel spoke to the Hungarian speaking 3 generations of women residents who gave us some water around a table for a local history lesson. They said about local Jewish winery owning family, who had since moved on, taken over by state then closed. Continued on our way through new vineyards, so someone must be investing. Into next big town and had expensive meal getting caught by the prices by weight system which was explained after we complained. Onto to buy some bread and milk and bumped into local Hungarian speaking man who said he would show us a camping site, as it was dark, after we'd drank a few beers and shared some local raw fish with his friend. They walked us 2k to the spot obviously buying beer from the petrol station and not the German owned brewery nearby, on the way and I noticed they were staggering. The position happened to be on the banks of an old quarry lake where they fished. It was dark and we found the spot occupied by a night fisherman so our man started shouting at him, he shouted back so we went to a spot nearby and set the tent up as they watched us drinking. Tent up and they said their good-byes so we went to talk to the Hungarian speaking fisherman, who had 8 rods on the go. Gave him a beer and we talked fishing and his job as a smuggler of petrol and tobacco. We went to bed but he wouldn't leave us alone bringing us a crayfish he was using as bait. Had the mosquito net up during night but then had to wake Lehel up to open it when I wanted a wee.
