Monday 6 August
Up quite late and went back to food place to spend my last Lei and as I was expecting problems with the bike on the sleeper went 2 hours early to station. Train arrived 30m before departure to absolute chaos but managed to get the bike into guards quarters by dodgy looking man who I guess wanted a tip, I didn't give him one. Put my stuff in my couchette watching the carnage and then onto the train just before it left. Asked to swop with Canadian Hong Kong religious man so he could be with his son. Had a good conversation then joined by another religious man who was sharing with a Romanian, Andrew on his way to Sziget festival. Got my beer out and shared with Andrew as the religious son couldn't drink as his father forbid it. Excellent route into Transylvanian mountains where a large amount of people got off at Brasov. Religious lot went to bed at dark so me and Andrew went to bar. The next carriage was absolutely packed with Sziget goers but the bar was quiet, I guess due to the price. The bar wouldn't accept HUF so I had to pay in dollars but then worked it out and they were ripping me off. Went back to pay with Andrews Lei and get my dollars back and it turned into a big argument with the steward shouting insults at Andrew saying he should stick with the Romanians against foreigners. We were amused and Andrew went into the next carriage to change some cash at a better rate which didn't go down well. Stayed till the bar closed and to bed where another passanger had joined me. In the night I had to go to the toilet so couldn't be bothered to put on any clothes so risked it and didn't get caught, I guess this counts as a streak. Other passenger got out at border and I stayed in bed and just handed my passport over when police came in. One of the best nights sleep on a train. At Budapest Andrew looked after my stuff while I got the bike but the conductor was insistent on me paying, so I did in HUF, no receipt though. Typical rip-off ending.
