Wednesday 1 August
Up took a few pictures of the town with a huge square, and cycled to Comrat up hill and down dale and it started to rain so I sheltered under a bus stop and had breakfast. It didn't stop raining so I got on with it, through Comrat, a grim old industrial town in another break away self governing area of Moldova called Gagauzia. Roads in a right state with huge water filled pot holes. Trouble with way as the road signs are in Gagauzian even though I'd got cyrillic and latin maps it was a struggle. Stopped in largest village in Europe for food and beer and lots of amusement as they couldn't speak English they decided to ignore me. Fortunately young girl was doing English in school so she could practice. Her brother played draughts with me but didn't know all the rules and I got drunk as it was raining heavy. Felt a little sloshed but it helped through the next k's. I had a choice of where to stay and they told me to go to Cahul on the Romanian border. Unfortunately I found this was hilly and windy and arrived at dusk again knackered. Found hotel and usual non English but then Julia was summoned who spoke really good English and she invited me to join her in the bar terrace. Had some food and had a really nice chat with Julia who told me a few secrets in her difficult life. Gave her a big tip and to bed.
