Back to the hub in the south: Pakse. Slept late, had an easy-going breakfast at Tim's restaurant, which is run by a nice guy Soulideth and his wife Tim. Soulideth speaks very good English and has been collecting jazz music for over 20 years, which he plays in the restaurant. Lovely! It's nice to hear Diana Krall and Billy Holiday in Laos. He also played music like the mellow Brazilian bossa nova (Stan Getz).
Soulideth gave me a ride to the main road where I waited an hour for the bus. The bus was one of those falling-apart types, clattering and moaning on all sides, and quite slow. The driver kept turning the steering wheel a full 360 degrees one way, then back the other way, on a straight road... weird...
Immediately on the street in Pakse I bumped into the nice French couple from Lille I'd met on that earlier bus ride (the one that broke down), Manon and Luca(s). They recommended a hotel for me and invited me to join them for drinks. Which was really nice. Later on the guy went to use the internet and the girl and I went to the Mekong river to see the sunset which was nice but not that spectacular. Loads of bats were flying there.
I had some Indian curry for dinner which was delicious, and a chocolate pancake for desert.
And I thought I might as well get another massage... why not? This one was a good one by a friendly lady.
