The ferry ride over the black sea wasn't too bad. There was a disco on board the ship and interesting people to chat with and some curious food items. Customs was also a new process. Everyone got off the boat and then you stand in a group until they call out your name. Taking into accounts accents and pronunciation you do have to pay close attention. Then you give them some money and you can enter Istanbul.

One of the first things you notice is the hospitatilty of the Turkish people. They are more than willing to help you fine your way. And I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't as strict a muslim country as I expected. Still no need to wear a bikin top down the street but you could be pretty comfortable in a short sleeved top and longer shorts.

Istanbul had some amazing sights - Aya Sofia, Blue Mosque, Topaki Palace, Dolmabahce Palace, underground Cistern - along with great shopping, hammams and the bazaar makes for a great place to visit.

It was fun to take the ferry across to Asia Minor for lunch and then back to the Europe side for dinner.

I met up with my flatmate Katie and we took in the sights. One night saw a dervish show but probably could have given that a miss. Still, always good to see things when travelling. Also went to the Archeology Museum which was quite amazing.
