Flag of Canada  , British Columbia,
Wednesday, August 29, 2007

It seems the more time we spend in BC, the closer to Germany we are!  They are taking over the West.  Alongside every Canadian flag is one from Germany.  The bear-proof garbage cans have directions in English and German, none in French.  I'm not sure if I give off some German radar or if I smell like sauerkraut but they seem to follow us everywhere.  And they can be spotted a mile away.  The couple walking with two hiking poles each: from Deutschland; The white-haired man with socks and sandals: named Wilhelm.  During our canoe trip yesterday I could even hear them on the water.  There weren't that many canoes, but every second boat was paddled by Germans.  They even followed us into the hostel.  The way they said "hi" gave them away.  With this influx of German visitors you'd expect (and hope for) more schnitzel sold in restaurants.

Our German respite came in the form of the Kamloops Pro Rodeo Saturday night.  Kevan was mine and Julies' personal announcer as he explained the events.  Calf roping, steer wrestling, bare-back riding, team roping, bullriding.  They had it all.  I still can't believe I went to a rodeo outside of the Calgary Stampede.  Even scarier still, Kamloops hosts the BC high school rodeo finals in the spring.  High school finals.  I'm guessing it's a section covered in Grade 11 gym class?  Regardless, we all had a fantastic time and now know to bring cushions to our next rodeo.
We have since departed from Julie as she left for Whistler Monday and we headed for Clearwater, with a stop to Sun Peaks for some biking.

On our drive back to Kamloops this morning, we saw a grizzly bear cub at the side of the road, three minutes from our hostel!  I was too slow getting my camera out but I'm pretty glad we didn't have to see the mom come out to meet us!  The only plans for today include a walk (and sun-baking) along the beach and waterfront and tomorrow we depart for (gulp) Kitchener.
