The lingering question
Entry 1 of 20 | show all | print this entry |
We have a few days to go and only a small list of things to get done: change money into foreign currency, photocopy documents, find all the documents, last-minute laundry, last-minute phone calls, last-minute thoughts of wondering what the hell we're about to do and what *harmless* reptiles we're about to meet. Okay, so that last point would be more my own thoughts, although I read that the pharmacies in South Africa have anti-snake venom kits. A small consolation for someone afraid of 1 cm long spiders. Nonetheless, the kit seems a necessary purchase, for the sole purpose of a SOUVENIR. We'll see at the end of this journey if my hard feelings towards hairy beasts with more than four legs or slithery suckers with no legs has changed. The countdown begins for difficult days spent lying on the beach, having meals cooked for you, meandering city streets (I like to think of it as exploring rather than, say, being lost), kayaking in 'shark alley' :) and most importantly, time away from the rigid, structural routine we often call 'life.' I hope you can enjoy and read the journals to come without *too* much jealousy, (or concern)...whatever the road might bring us. We're off, equipped with malaria pills, rain suits and a guide book to find our way through South Africa. The only question left: will I find it in me to return?
