We should start by saying that we switched captains in Valparaiso, the new one is Italian....  We were in the Observation Lounge when we sailed out, we headed out straight (west) from the port, then turned left (south) into the Pacific and all of a sudden the boat lurched so that the glasses at the bar started to topple and the outside door to the lounge lurched open.  The bartender mumbled that the boat wasn't a maserati....

Puerto Montt is the start of Chile's southern section and the centre of the Lake District. It marks the end of the Pan Pacific highway which runs from here to Alaska - Fran & Tom, you guys like to drive why don't you consider a drive from Alaska to Chile instead of your cross canada drive next summer??

It's beautiful with hundreds of lakes and dozens of volcanos, also the hub for Patagonia-minded tourists.  The Germans settled here, you can see why, there are lakes and mountains, clear air and an undulating landscape well adapted to farming.  Homes are wood shingled, neat as a pin, with beautiful flower gardens (blue hydrangeas everywhere due either to heavy concentrations of copper in the ground or volcanic ash)  and lots of Lutheran churches.  The weather here is equivalent to Seatle, mild but lots of rain & cloudy days.

We took a tour to the town of Puerto Varas, which sits on the edge of a glacier lake "Llanquihue Lake".  We drove half way around the lake passing by the Osorno Volcano, spectacular although the top was shrouded in clouds.  We stopped at the Petrohue Waterfalls, which actually reminded us of the falls at Mount Tremblant Park or Gatineau Park.... the water from the falls is normally a milky emerald green but due to a recent rain fall, the water looked more like chocolate milk. We saw a small grey fox but it was too quick to capture in a photo.
