Where I stayed
We explain to Zac what our change of plans mean (a extra day at Legoland). To our absolute amazement, he is disappointed. He asks why we can't do more junior ranger things. But it is too late now. And we know he will love Legoland. At least his immediate response tells us a few things - he has loved his national park adventures and he was certainly ready for this type of holiday. That is a huge relief because we really want him to enjoy traipsing through the parks as much as we do.
Its a big driving day with not much to see, so we push on as much as we can, as early as we can. Zac sends up a kids prayer asking God to make it rain. Ha, Ha, good one Zac.
We detour at Ontario, on the outskirts of LA and quickly stop at the California Speedway, which is the ultimate destination for Lightning McQueen in the Cars movie - a nice end to our Route 66 adventure.
And then we head to the Ontario Mall. We came here once in 1996, when it was brand new. Its a bit bigger now - the largest Mall in the Western USA and its all outlets. Zac has been itching to see Alvin and the Chipmunks movie and we have made good time, so we stop for a treat. He likes the movie. It was a struggle for Cass and I (a real struggle). But thankfully, it finishes. We wander outside and would you believe it - Zac's prayers have been answered. Its pouring.
We decide a short stop in the shops might be worthwhile. This place makes Indooroopilly look pedestrian. It has everything, its big, its wall to wall outlets and its packed. Looking around, its hard to find someone who is not weighed down with huge bags of "stuff". And its hard not to join in - particularly when there is a Lego outlet here. But other than a very small bag, we escape with our wallets in tact.
Its bigger than back home, but the oddity of it all is still there - why do we, as a western culture, seek solace in "stuff"? All of these people spending loads of money on "stuff" to replace or suppliment the "stuff" they already have? And none of it will make any one a better person or a happier person. Yet, these same people will be here again next year and the year after that, doing the same thing, seeking the same thing and achieving the same useless result Pity they don't see that they should be looking elsewhere for the answers.
Still raining. I tell you, when it comes to rain, Zac had a hotline to heaven. This is not the first time he has done this.
Rain and peak hour in LA. Oh, boy, that sounds like fun.
It takes a while, but we get to our destination. Its late, its been a long day and Legoland awaits in the morning. Fortunately, Zac went to sleep shortly after we were back in the car.
