Lamington, land of lianes and leeches

After a three day relaxation period in Brisbane we drove a few hours south to Lamington Rainforest National Park. It was my first time in a rainforest, and it was exactly as imagined (minus the monkeys). We spent our days doing some field work collecting leaves and counting species as well as taking fabulous hikes throughout the rainforest. Our last day we embarked on a 18 km hike to the top of the Caldera. Lamington National Park is situated on a slope of the Lamington Volcano, which is an ancient volcano from the Triacic period and one of the largest volcanoes ever. So on our final hike we went up the slope to the rim of the volcano (the center has sunk down). Unfortunately it was a cloudy and rainy day so there wasn't much of a view at the top, but the hike up was beautiful and lined with wonderful waterfalls, vines, and trees. The only downside was that the rain brought out the leeches and every five minutes we would have to stop to peel them off our legs. It was rather disgusting, but makes for a good story!
