Where I stayed
The original plans were to ride to Key West and start the Ultimate Challenge there, but after checking my contacts in Alaska, they tell me that riding to Prudhoe Bay after September 10th, can be iffy. The time allotted for Ultimate Coast to Coast Challenge ride is 30 days. That would have me arriving at the Arctic Ocean in the later part of September if I go to Florida first. The ride can be done in less days but why? You miss all the great sights, people and food if you rush through it. So change of plans: I will leave Houston the 18th and head North to Alaska first, get up to and out of Deadhorse before the heavy snows start. Then work my way South and East to Florida. (Just got a note from another Alaska rider saying he has seen 6 feet of snow in early September on the Haul Road).
That's settled let's ride! The bike, "High Horse" because it stands so tall, needs new shoes, fresh fluids and it is raring to go. All the needed gear is on hand, waiting to be packed. Revise the final maps and ride.
The last "BIG" decision to make is: Do I carry the spare set of tires with me or mail them to Alaska? I will start with new 80/20 street/dirt tires. Good for cruising and gravel roads. Not so good for mud. The second set are 20/80 tires. Ideal for the muddy Haul Road from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. Am planning on swapping tires in Fairbanks. The question is, what is the possibility that I will need to mount the off-road tires before I get to Fairbanks? Hmmmmmm. Stay tuned for more.
