Kelly's Birthday and Host Familiies
Most of us began with a shower on Saturday morning (although some had still not received their bags). In Holland in appears that they do not have temperature regulators on the hot water, so it can become quite scalding if left unchecked.
We began Saturday with a typical Dutch breakfast. Of course we started with coffee, which is served in much smaller cups. This is probably a good thing because it is much stronger than American coffee, but there is no bitter aftertaste. Most Dutch appear to drink it black. (Yikes!) The buffet of breakfast items included A LOT of bread from which to choose, yogurt (which is much more watery than our yogurt), cereal, fruit, and a special type of stick bun called ______bolen____. We all also learned about a typical Dutch breakfast food, which is buttered bread with chocolate sprinkles (hageslag) on top.
After breakfast we celebrated Kelly's birthday! Yay Kelly!
Not longer after breakfast we learned more about Dutch culture, and then met some of our host families. Our host, Janet, was very welcoming and glad to see us, as were all the hosts that I could see! All the hosts then took us to a dyke (dijk) where we could swim in the salt water, but it was very cold so we just walked on the beach or put our feet in the water (which was actually quite warm). Nina (the intern from Czech Republic) did jump in the water however. She admits to being a bit crazy.
In the evening we had dinner and spent time with our host families. Dan and I enjoyed a Dutch spaghetti. Then we met up at the Gospeltheek which is a type of Christian club where the kids can enjoy a (smoke and alcohol free) party environment. We enjoyed listening to loud music, playing cards, and playing musical chairs. We also had a chance to just sit and talk with some more of our new Dutch friends. The club closes at 12, but most went home before that and went to bed for another night's sleep!
