After about 16 hours of traveling (It felt like more with the time change), we arrived at Vierslag (which I'm sure I spelled wrong). Vierslag is the Atlantic Bridge house where we spent our first night in The Netherlands. We had a quick walk around the village and then it was time for dinner. We were served a spaghetti goulash type of meal which we were told is not a traditional Dutch meal, but nevertheless delicious. It was, however, served with real Dutch "CHEESE" which is more than delicious. I have to admit that Ali and I ate more than our fair share of that! We also were served a salad that included lettuce, eggs, tomatoes, onions, and a creamy dressing that is much like a more watery and sweeter version of creamy Italian dressing. For dessert, we were served a traditional Dutch dessert____Vla_______, which is like a looser version of pudding. There were two varieties: Chocolate and Vanilla, or Vanilla and Strawberry.
After eating, we all cleaned up. Debbie and I learned how to do dishes the "Dutch way" which is, of course, very economical and eco-friendly. First you fill a basin or tub with water and soap and presoak the dishes. Then you empty the tub and repeat the process. Then you rise off the soap. It is not appropriate to let the water run.
After cleaning, we had an organizational meeting to go over the trip schedule. Then, it was off to see a bit more of the town. We learned that it doesn't get dark until about ten or eleven o'clock, so it was about 9 when we ventured out to check out the village which was mostly quiet and closed already, except for one bar and a ice cream shop. Kirsten kept commenting that it didn't feel like a real place, and she was right. It felt like we were in some Disneyworld village, not in Europe. I think we came to that conclusion because everything is quite quaint and much of this village is perfectly maintained.
We ended the day with some singing, and finally going to bed! It was great to be able to lie down and rest.
