6th Dec. cont.

We arrived just after 9am and headed for the Visitor Centre to check what trails were open. We chose two trails. Firstly, the Bear Gulch Cave Trail which was a short walk to a talus cave. A talus cave is formed by a boulder, or boulders, falling into a canyon and blocking it up. They are really quite cool. After completing this short walk we drove to the next trailhead and parked up. This second trail, The Old Pinnacles Trail, was longer but to another talus cave, Balconies Cave. On the return route we walked along the Balconies Cliff Trail. We had lunch just before arriving at the cave and I only managed to smack my head once in both caves. We returned to Brian around 3pm and headed out of the Pinnacles to head south towards Atascadero and began the search for a place to park up. Along the way, we spotted a rest area at San Miguel, so we pulled in and noticed it may have a limit of only 8hours. We decided to play it safe and drove to San Miguel to see if they had a McDonalds. Fat chance! Instead, we pulled up in a lay-by and watched the movie, The Sorcerer's Apprentice with Nicolas Cage. We then returned to the south side rest area and parked up. We were soon tucked up in bed, this time with thermals on, for the last time, (for a little while anyway), in Brian.
