24th Nov. cont.

As it was getting late and we had had an extremely long day of driving yesterday, we decided to drive only to Merced (approx. an hour and half from the park) and find somewhere to park up. We already new it had a big 'W'. Arrived at Walmart to find no friendly campers in sight, so we popped in to check it was ok to stay. On the way out of the store, we noticed that some of the staff were setting up event fencing, making a trail to the entrance. We were curious, as we had not seen this at any Walmart previously. We were told that as it was Black Friday sales night they were expecting lots of people, so the fencing was to control their entry into the store. We didn't think any further about the matter, went and parked up and cooked dinner, only to find that we were right on top of the railway track with trains passing by every hour or so, (this is going to be fun!). We then popped into the store to see if we could find a nice cake or something for desert, as it was Thanksgiving. No such luck, but we did however, find out that the sale didn't start until 10pm tonight and at 8pm there were already people in the store waiting with their trolleys. Around 8.30pm, we settled in to watch the movie Flushed Away and around 9pm we heard cars parking next to us. When we looked out the windows to see why they would park next to us when they had the whole car park to park in, discovered a massive queue of people leading from the store through the now full car park! This was not a small sale! Tonight is going to be interesting, trains & sales! After the movie we got ready for bed, checked out the window, the queue had not shortened, so we closed our eyes and hoped for a peaceful night.

25th Nov.

Woke to a quiet morning, after a relatively quiet night except for the *!"^ trains! Why do they feel the need to keep blaring out their horns. Surely, once is enough! Anyway, up around 7am, had breakfast and headed to the Visitor Centre just around the corner to see if we could pick up information on San Francisco, Los Angeles or Sequoia National Park. A couple of leaflets and email to a new friends who lives between these two cities later, we headed out of Merced, stocking up at the supermarket first. We had changed our plans again and now were heading to Sequoia National Park instead of either of the two cities, as we hoped to see our friends first, as they may be able to give us tips on what to see and do in the cities.
