19th Nov. cont.

After a rather surprisingly rough and winding Route 66, we arrived back at Kingman, refueled and shot up the US93 to Hoover Dam. We arrived around 1pm, or was it 12pm, as we had crossed another time zone we had gained another hour. However, the dam is built across the Colorado River and therefore spans both Arizona and Nevada, so we weren't sure which time we arrived there at! After driving across the new bridge, built to replace the dam as the main crossing, we then had to drive over the dam anyway to find a parking spot as we were too high to get in the parking garages. So after crossing into Nevada, we had crossed back into Arizona to park and then walked back into Nevada across the dam. We had lunch before entering the Visitor Centre and booking our Power Plant Tour. The tour consisted of a visit to a penstoke pipe tunnel and the Nevada generator room. It was really quite interesting. After the tour finished, we headed out to the top of the dam to take photos and then returned to Brian. Our next stop was a short walk up to and across the new bridge to get another view of the dam. We also made a quick stop at a scenic view of Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam. We then headed out to Las Vegas.
