7th Nov.

Up at 7.30am, had breakfast, packed up the van and headed out of Marathon at around 9.30am. Today we're heading to New Mexico and with a quick stop at the Apache Trading Post, Alpine to watch a short video on the Marfa Lights we were on our way, only stopping to fuel up at Marfa as it was the cheapest fuel we'd yet found. Approximately 4hrs later we arrived at Guadalupe Mountain National Park after having to put the clocks back again as we'd crossed into Mountain Time. We stopped for lunch in a rest area just before the park and then headed to the Visitor Centre to see what walks we had time to do. We chose two small ones. One to The Pinery, an old stagecoach stop where the horses were changed. This was all in ruins with not a lot left to see. We then headed out on The Smith Springs trail which started at Frijole Ranch. However, the museum at the ranch was closed so we just headed straight out on the trail. First stop was at Manzanita Springs which to us just looked like a small pond! We continued on until we came to Smith Springs which was a lovely calm and quiet place surrounded by trees in their fall colours. After a little while, we returned to the van via a different route down. It was a lovely walk and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
