Got up at 7.30am, had breakfast and then checked out of the hotel. We then caught the bus to Union Station to catch the Amtrak Coast Starlight train to Seattle. We boarded the train at 10 and bang on 10.15 the train left the station to start our 35hr journey. For a few hours we trundled along through the city and towns on the outskirts until we reached the coast which we followed for a few more hours. At Santa Barbara, two park rangers from the Juan Bautista de Anza natural history trail got on board and gave us a guided talk of the area we were traveling through. During their talk we saw 2 or 3 Californian Grey Whales jumping and splashing around in the ocean. We also passed by the Vandenberg air force base that test and launch military missiles and satellites. We then started heading inland past an oil field, over some bridges and through some tunnels where the landscape changed to farmland. At 7.15pm we headed to the dining car to order a meal, as the portions here are big and the prices on board were quite expensive, we decided to share a meal
Got woken off and on through the night and by 8.30am we gave up, looked out the window at the amazing view of Upper Klamath Lake with snowcapped mountains in the back ground. Good morning America! We got some hot water from the cafe and made our breakfast of Quaker
porridge oats that we got from the hotel and a nice cup of tea. Not long after the lake we started to climb through the mountains and were soon surrounded by snow covered ground and trees. It was magical! Not long after that we started to descend the mountains and went back to views of lakes and trees, but we also noticed that the further north we head, the more it seems to rain. At 1pm we ordered lunch from Gregory and ate a veggie burger in the viewing/lounge car.
