19th Apr. cont.

There was however some confusion on the bus as there was a family complaining that they had to pay for their son (who was well over the under 5 goes free being 11) and he'd have to share a seat with his parents to make room for us. The driver basically said make the most of it, it's going to take 10hrs because we have to go via Armenia and there's no other choice. So Cat sat in the front next to the driver (which was good as she wasn't feeling too well with a bad throat and didn't feel very sociable) and I sat next to a nice Colombian chap called Oscar near the door. Oscar and I got chatting (in Spanglish) and as he worked with software on mobile phones gave me some cool apps for my phone including an English to Spanish translator and some games. It ended up being a really fun bus and the family at the back loosened up and we had a laugh, especially when I threw them some sweets! We got stopped a few times by the police, once for a bag search and once more for a pat down. The guy doing the pat down had a great sense of humour and was happy to pose for some photos. At one of the other stops, some of us got off to have a pee and stretch our legs and one of the passengers decided to take back on board a duck he'd found by the river. He looked at us all with a smile and said, Almuerzo (lunch)! We're not sure what acually happened to the duck as after lunch it was gone! We think the road we should have taken was closed due to heavy rain and that's why we had to back track to Armenia, but we finally got into Manizales at 9.30pm (around 10 and a half hours). We then waved goodbye to Oscar and caught a taxi to the hostal we'd booked, when we got there (because it was wet) I slipped on the bottom step (with back pack on) and landed on my bum and just sat and laughed. Once we'd checked in, (Cat was shivering by now due to a draft from the window on the bus) we went straight up to our room, had a cup of tea and got off to bed.
