16th Oct. cont.

Arrived into Iquitos at around 8.30pm and got a taxi to our room at Hotel La Casona, luckily the room is in the middle of the hotel and not on the street as there are hundreds of motorbikes and moto taxis racing up and down which are pretty noisy! We had a quick wander to find a shop for something to eat and first impressions of Iquitos are it's a dump and can't wait to get out of here!

17th Oct.

Managed to get some sleep after asking someone to turn their music down, got up and made our own breakfast, back to bread and jam.
It's only 10am and it's already sweltering but just down the road is some sort of procession with police, army, navy and the air force parading around the main square. We're getting good at finding these! Had a bit more wandering around looking for boat company's and hammocks and bumped into a lady we met in Friends House in Lima from Turkey called Phylis, she was heading upriver on Monday and had already bought her hammock so was more organized than us. As the boat company's were shut being a Sunday we would have to go back tomorrow. We had lunch in a restaurant next door called Huasai that is recommended in the guide book, it was very busy and very good. In the evening we went down to the boulevard as we read that Sat and Sundays there are plenty of street performers, foods and music but to be honest it was a bit more like a Sunday market so headed back early.

18th Oct.

Got up around 8 had breakfast and headed out to the boat company's to book a fast boat to Santa Rosa, where on the way we bumped into Phylis again, she was in a hurry this time as she had to get to the port to book her boat for this evening. We then headed down to the Belen market (tip from the guide book and Phylis) to buy our hammocks for the second boat trip from Tabatinga in Brazil to Manis. The noise from the bikes and people at the markets was a bit more than we could cope with but after several attempts we went back to our room bag in hand with hammocks for the boat trip. Today seems to be hotter than yesterday so after some more lovely lunch next door we spent a few more hours in the room under the fan at warp speed we then got our bags ready for the early morning 4am start for our boat trip down the Amazon.
