Day-tripping on Samos en route to Athens. A slower pace from Turkey, if that is possible. While my fellow passengers were searched as we came off the ferry I waltzed on through. The advantage of a bikini and sarong when passing through international customs....

Samos is the closest island to the Turkish tourist town of Kusadasi. This was my last Turkish town. For this trip at least. I chilled for a day at the famous Sammy's Palace, sat in deck chairs on Pigeon Island overlooking the deep waters of the harbour, and explored 'Bar Lane' with the Palace crew. The name alone sums up the quality of that particular tourist trap, but they did have the good taste to be playing Kylie..... constantly. Ange, Sally and I had to knock a few English schoolboys off the bar - they were claiming our dance space. At an ungodly hour the next morning, when the sun was shining brightly and I still had not been to bed (just because I was still dancing, Mum)I caught the ferry to Samos.

Samos is lovely once you escape the cafe strip that runs alongside the harbour. How many cafes does one island need? Samos Town does have it's quaint, quintessential Greek island sights of hibiscus growing over white washed walls and cats sunning themself on the flagstones of the narrow, hillside street.

I killed time learning to play backgammon and eating toasted cheese sandwiches on a patio overlooking a small beach. So nice to have plain, old comfort food. As much as I have loved the gourmet delights of this trip, plain and familiar cuisine is welcome occasionally.

The water was fantastic, even rivalling my much adored Adriatic Sea. Even more exciting, there were waves! Just little ones, but waves nonetheless. Having harped on about the dangers of the sun all holiday and lathered myself with SPF 30+ at every opportunity, I did the unthinkable. I fell asleep in the sun. Horror of horrors! The result was a mild case of sunburn and........... strap marks! Yes, all my efforts at the perfect tan ruined by a twenty minute snooze. I struggle on knowing my tan is now less than perfect.
In some discomfort I caught the overnight ferry to Athens. Thirteen hours of deep sleep and dribbling on myself. Lovely.
