Especially Joao and his wife Cecilia on Pico island
They welcomed me into their home every two weeks for a night of home cooking and Joao's father's homegrown wine ... two glasses of the stuff and I was unable to speak, eventually able to grunt, roll my eyes and slur that "I think I'm going to be sick!" Cecilia advised me to sit on their backstep for a while and their son Pedro wondered what was wrong with 'A Senora'
Also on Pico, the driver collective of Antonio, Antonio, Carlos and Joe
On Sao Jorge island, Luis the Driver Extraordinaire who knows everyone's coming and goings and has tales of tour leaders and travellers from the last 20 years. And Maria & Eleuterio for treating me like family these last five months and for "My Room".
In Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel island: the chirpy Joe at Joe's Bar (left) and the staff at O Corisco restaurant (right)
And of course Emilia at Hotel , Sao Miguel. The Azores most welcoming receptionista whose husky declaration of "Oh Mafia! Mafi-O-SA!" whenever we met had me in stitches and her hugs swept me off my feet. The Azores strongest receptionista is she.
Emilia watched me cook my little evening meal in the hotel kitchen but declined to try with an emphatic shout, "NO! I just look." Our fortnightly catchups of portuguese soap operas were another saving grace.
"Tonight, we watch THE KISS! Oh, everybody wants it to happen, EVERYbody!"
