Had my longest lie-in yet this morning, didn’t get up till nearly 8! Had a mountain of pancakes and waffles for brekkie, then wandered down to Monterey Aquarium. This aquarium is quite famous, and cost a small fortune, but neither of us were that impressed. The exhibits they had were good (apart from the flamingos and the penguins, who were kept in tiny enclosed inside areas with no dayllight at all) but they just didn’t have enough of them. It was a huge place, but most of the rooms were just full of posters warning about global warming, ocean pollution etc. To be honest, by the time I had walked through the fifth room full of preaching posters and interactive screens, I was quite tempted to go and throw a carrier bag into the sea just for the hell of it. I know we need to look after our world, but I didn’t pay $60 just to be told this. I paid to see sea creatures, and there weren’t that many of those at all. The jellyfish were beautiful, and the sea otters really cute, but there just wasn’t enough for the amount they charged. You could see more just by looking out into the bay and watching the seals basking on the rocks and the gulls picking up starfish.

In the afternoon, we decided to take advantage of having a car by driving along a famous road called 17 Mile Drive. You have to pay for the pleasure of driving down this private road, but it was worth it to see the huge houses and the ocean views. We also met my favourite American animal yet, the ground squirrel, and discovered that they are rather fond of Cheetos. I have made it my mission to somehow smuggle one of these cuties back home. I seem to recall some kind of problems in the past with American squirrels on our country, but surely no one would object to one of these lovelies scuttling through their garden?
