Titre: Entry #4 «It's your birthday girl, you can have the world. . .»

Élément analysé: Élément culturel, coutume ( Birthday parties for kids and teenagers)

Description: As the saying goes, «Everything is bigger in Texas!» Texans are known for impressive cars, big money and  I could definitely assert that the same rule could apply to birthday Parties! Traditionally, in our wonderful province of Quebec,  birthday parties sounds like people gathering and enjoying a sweet chocolate cake decorated with candles which will be then blown by the celebrated person. In other cases, turning 18, or the age of majority represents a new step through adulthood and the occasion is celebrated in a bar with some friends, something quite simple. simple . However, in Texas, it seems to be a big deal, especially in Coppell!  When Judy told me that Jamie( Judy's daughter) was going to a party for her friend’s birthday, I first thought they would have a girly night and a pajama party. . . and actually, I was totally wrong. In fact, I was really impressed and amazed when Judy explained me that the father of the celebrated girl had organized a night for 20 teenagers and they were driven to their destination in the comfortable bus that the Dallas Cowboys use when they go to a publicity tour! Then they all had beauty treatments , had their nails done and had diner in a luxurious restaurant!

Constat / analyse: When Jamie perceived my surprise, she  mentioned me that one of her friend was offered a limo tour when she turned 8, a few days ago. So, I guess it means that people here grant more importance to anniversaries than people in Quebec.Furthermore, it’s not rare for a youth here to receive a car as a gift, not a junker but a brand new car! I talked with a 16-years-old girl which was about to turn 17 and she was hoping to receive the Mustang of her dream for the fatidic day.I have to admit that the situation really surprises me. I mean it is crazy that the relatives here give their children whatever they wish. Jamie also confessed me that it is a lot of pressure for her and her parents to have a nice party for their birthday and it is almost a competition for the parents to pretend they are the best and the most fortunate. Coppell is a district quite rich ,thus it might explain the situation. However, the situation really disappoints me because it represents and contributes to preserve the perfect American stereotype . Here, in this district, children are really the center of the universe. On the other hand, it makes me proud of the children in Quebec because even if their generation is  characterized by egocentricity it is not as worst as here.

Photo: On this photo, we can see some girls in a limo. I think it represents pretty well the luxurious concept surrounding the birthday parties in Coppell.

Texan culture seems to be quite fascinating! Canadians tend to be quite well acquainted with the American values /way of life because of the geographical proximity, the media and Holywood; but I think that to be immersed in the culture is a completely different story! I bet you will have a lot to say about it all when you come back! Have a lovely week-end Cathy! :)
