We start off with the obvious attraction and take the boat over to Alcatraz. It's surprisingly small, bright and quite cheery even with the whinging and whineing interviews from ex-prisoners that you listen to as you walk round. The Golden Gate bridge stubbornly stays in the fog.

Back on dry land we visit the "sea-lion'lebrities" at pier 39 before a crab lunch. We spend the afternoon riding around the cablecars and walking through union square area. (As with the world series, football and a host of other wrongly named things, the cablecars are not what the rest of the world would call a cable car, these are tramcars pulled up the hils by underground cables. Still very cool and unique to San Francisco tho).

We head back to our hotel and wrap up warm before we head out to Monster Park (formerly Candlestick Park) where we watch the San Francisco 49'ers play the San Diego Chargers at American football (not football). The game is really entertaining, the people are really friendly and the food is ace (hotdogs, garlic chips and... and... and... cold beer - in your seat - while you watch the game! Its not even the non-alcoholic muck they try to serve in european stadiums!) The stadium was designed so there would be no cold wind blowing inside so of course, its cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey, luckily the cheerleaders seem to be used to this.

Next morning we rent bikes and ride along the waterfront to the Golden Gate Bridge which today is visible. We cycle over the bridge to Sausalito from where we get the ferry back. More crab for lunch before we are back in the car and on the road again, its a shame because San Francisco is brilliant and we could spend much more time here.

We take highway 5 down California, its a fairly average drive along a motorway. Eventually we cut over to highway 58 and, as its dark, we stop in Tehachapi.
