This evening we went for a farewell dinner because four of the group will be leaving for Bangkok in the morning.  We went to the Temple Restaurant, a place specialising in Khmer food and dancing.  We were lucky to get a tabke directly opposite the stage so we had a good view of the dancer's performance.

Apsara means celestial being, and apsara dancing is a Khmer tradition.  Sadly, over the years a lot fo the traditional dances have been forgotten or influenced by other nations, but today the apsara dance has evolved into its own tradition and style.  Dancers, male and demale, wear elaborate and colourful  costumes.  The movements can be small and precise and very slow, but often become animated.  What doesn't chance is the graceful movement or the distorted position or hands and feet.    Each dance tells a tale, tales of everydya life, of history, of Khmer mythology.  Beautifully executed, we were treated to a show of live music and singing to accompany the apsara dancers.

After dinner, we retired to the Temple Club downstairs where we proceeded, in true backpacker style, to take full advantage of the two cocktails for $3.50 offer.  I don't think there was even a drop of alcohol as much as waved over my glasses because no matter how much I consumed, I didn't get drunk/  Still, we all had the most excellent fun, the hardcore of us leaving at 2am, and only then because the dance music had reached that level of crapness that we all gave up dancing.
