Another truck day – I spent today teaching Chris to do the Rubix cube, chatting and attempting to snooze. I was sitting at the back of the truck today and it's really bumpy back there so sleep is tricky!!
The first few days on the truck have been real 'getting to know people’ days – people are changing seats every day so they get to chat with different groups and on the stops everyone is chatting to everyone else. I think I have most people’s names logged in the brain but there’s a couple I just can’t get to ‘stick’, not because they’re dull people, just one of those bizarre things!
We drove all the way to Prague arriving at the camp site at 7pm....and our first hot shower, actually our first shower of any description, which, incidentally is the reason for the daft hat - bad hair day!!
The camp site is on an island in the river about 15 minutes from the city centre. We had stir-fry and rice for dinner and then sat chatting for a bit before having an early night in preparation for our first ‘tourist day’ tomorrow. This was the first time I'd spent any time with Fran and she had us all in stitches.
We were up at 8am and headed into Prague centre on the tram. The group split into smaller groups – I went with Owen, Sarah, Fran, Chris and John. We got off the tram earlier than we should’ve but we happened upon an outdoor shop which was handy because Owen wanted a new bag and I wanted to buy a fleece sleeping bag liner. The nights are sooo cold, I can’t continue to wear the entire contents of my backpack to bed!! They didn’t have any liners for me but the shop assistants were really friendly and we learnt how to say thank you, hello and good bye in Czech :o)
We had a fabulous day wandering aimlessly around the city, taking in the Charles Bridge, the main square with the funky clock, and the castle amongst other unidentified attractions! None of us bought a guide book with us, but Sarah bought a guide book for the castle for 275Kroners without realising quite how expensive it was (around £12!) and consequently she took a lot of ribbing for the rest of the day – especially from her boyfriend Owen. I suspect she will be reminded of this purchase later in the trip when Owen wants to purchase something frivolous!!
Later in the day we stumbled upon another 'outdoor' shop and I managed to buy a fleece sleeping bag....possibly the most exciting purchase I've made in a long time!! We had lunch in a lovely restaurant and climbed the tower in the square and then met up with some of the others for a drink later on.
Up at 5.45am, after a rather toasty night in my lovely new fleecey liner, for another truck day! The first part of this trip includes many ‘truck days’ as we scoot through Europe but once we reach Turkey more time will be spent in each place. The truck days are actually not too bad – the seats are just like normal coach seats and we stop every couple of hours for a leg stretch. As we’re still at the ‘getting to know everyone’ stage the time has flown by.
We stopped for supplies at Tescos on the way to the ‘Bone Church’ which is a couple of hours away from Prague. The Church is totally decorated with human bones – very strange! I’m not entirely sure why or who by, but it’s a funky looking place! Apparently bones were also used in the mortar used to build it.
The truck journey the rest of the way to Vienna was pretty uneventful and we arrived at the camp site at around 5.30pm. I had a hot shower, the cook team made spaghetti Bolognese and everyone had decided earlier that tonight would be a good night to have a few drinks as we don’t have to get up early. We sat outside drinking until the heavens opened for the first time on the trip and we all scurried into the camp bar to continue the evening. The bar was supposed to close at 9pm but Owen befriended the bar manager so she stayed open until we left after midnight!! I spent most of the evening getting to know our driver, Adam – a musician who’s just decided to give his career a slight change of direction!!
