Cappadocia is known for its cave dwellings, which date back thousands of years. These dwellings, or rather Underground cave cities, were carved over years into elaborate fortresses which could house thousands of people. Many of the dwellings had provisions for 3000-5000 people, giving it the feeling of being in something of a enormous man-made ant mound. Still today, people are carving out new homes from the rock here.
