It is hard for us to believe, but we have been traveling for one month now. All of the Mayan archeological sites we visited in Mexico seem so long ago already. What is even harder for us to conceptualize is that we now know that we will be out of the country for a total of 10 months. 5 months of travel, and 5 months of work, in that order. I recently accepted a field instructor position in Costa Rica with an organization called Ecology Project International (www.ecologyproject.org). Training begins in March and I will be leading programs for both US and Costa Rican high school and college students in sea turtle conservation and rainforest ecology through July. EPI also has programs in the Galapagos, Baja, and Montana (where they are based out of). I am super excited for this opportunity. Matt will likely be volunteering for a cool project, possibly as a biological researcher at a reserve nearby, and take me to his favorite spots in Costa Rica when we are not working.
EPI generously accomodated my request to also be able to lead the follow-up adventure to the trip in Peru I co-led for Global Explorers (www.globalexplorers.org) this past June. The same group of amazing students has organized a trip to climb Kilimanjaro in June 2007, so I will have a jaunt over to Tanzania for that adventure as well.
A lot to look forward to, and some good times had thus far... Make plans to visit us in Costa Rica, you know you want to!

Africa trip
Casey,
That is great news about Africa! As you know, the summit glaciers and icefields are nearly gone and you'll be among the last people to see them. My friend Lonnie Thompson took some ice cores there a few years ago to capture information on past climates before it is gone. Tell Matt I am working on my Spanish occasionally so I'll be up to a 5-year old level by the time we visit you in Costa Rica!
Love,
Dan
Congratulations!
Good for you! I'm glad to hear your news. Can I reserve the week of April 16th for my visit? Your adventures are so much more exciting than my French studies!
