Our last morning in Tulum, we woke up early to pack up and head out of town on a 9 am bus. This was complicated by the fact that the señora of the hostel did not come over to unlock our bags from storage until 8:15, and then we had to ask our taxi driver to return to the hostel just before reaching town to get a bag of forgotten groceries. We made it to the station just in time, and arrived at the most famous Mayan ruin site in the Yucatan a few hours later. Despite being in the low tourist season, Chichen Itza was bustling with tour groups and ¨people like us,¨ but it didn´t take away from the mystic feel of the place. El Castillo was more impressive than any pictures can portray, although disappointed to find out that you can no longer climb the steep staircase up it. Our slightly outdated guidebook frequently lies to us, and this was one of them. We had to be satisfied by the phenomenom of hand claps from numerous tour groups making a fast zipping sound as they echoed up the stairs. It was interesting to see how different parts of the ruin had been built at different times in Mayan history, evidenced by changing styles of columns and art. They even recycled stones and artwork from abandoned buildings when rebuilding the city later on. We explored every part of the ruin in about three hours and sweated about three gallons while doing so. Then it was off to Merida, by bus of course, where we arrived in the early evening. We think we will stay here for two or three days.

All of your entries are entertaining and engaging. Soak up the sun and warmth for me. The blue skies and warm temps of yesterday turned to wind, rain and hail this afternoon. Keep sending out the photos and stories.
