What I did

Flag of Thailand  , Krabi,
Saturday, June 4, 2011

From Vietnam we flew to Bangok in the morning but had 5 hours to kill before our next flight to Krabi. Krabi is a province of Thailand where we then plan to go the various islands. We weren't too bothered though, in fact we were quite glad cos we had plans to keep our self busy. I was going to update my travel blog, have my facebook fix, we were going to have a nice meal and then have a long awaited massage. Well, that soon went out of window as we checked in then realised that EVERYTHING was on the otherside!! We were in the Domestic section of the airport so there were sod all to do other than eat a McDonalds and read our books! What a set of kranks,we shoud've just waited till hour before to check in. Gutted!! Going through passport control i was in absolute stitches. We both walked over to the counter where 2 serious looking Thai women sat, when Ryan shows his passport and the woman just stared back at Ryan looking rather confused. She looked at the photo. Then back at Ryan. Then back at the photo. Then back at Ryan, raising her eyebrows. "Big??" Then started gesturing with her hands around her head. (Ryan's just looking on not impressed looking behind to see if there's a queue). She continued very matter-of-fact,  "fat head??". I was in stitches, she were confused and Ryan was embarrassed all the while him trying to explain that yes he did in fact have a fat head on the photo thank-you very much but that he could assure her it was him. After a few more minutes a tiny grin eventually past her lips, and she nodded us through. Hilarious!! Its defo worst passport picture have ever seen and it doesn't do him justice that he has a massive fleece on right up to the bottom of his chin so he looks like he has no neck!! Ha ha funny as.
The rest of the journey was uneventful and we arrived in Krabi where we shared a taxi with an American couple into Krabi town centre. We hadn't booked an hotel so had a little walk round eventually settling for a decent enough one, then all decided to go out for some food and a few drinks together. The town was really quiet, there wasn't much happening at all. We stopped at a 'restaurant' which was very authentic and very very local. We were the only Westerners in sight and the way everyone turned their heads when we were seated you'd think we all had shit on our face!! I was a bit reluctant at first cos it was much like street food but it turned out to be very nice and we had a good laugh with the Americans. After our meal we attempted to find a bar but couldn't so went off to bed for another early night.
The next morning we left Krabi town centre behind and jumped on a boat to Railay which is part of the mainland but can only be reached by boat. It has another absolute stunning beach with various resorts split into 2 sections, the East side and the West side. The West side is the main beach and very expensive to stay but we decided that we were going to spend the following few days revitilising and detoxing so would therefore more or less blow our daily budget on our accomodation (scrap this 'now we're travellers' lark i wanted luxury again! Just for a few days anyway!). So with just enough money left to live on for food, strictly NO ALCOHOL we booked into a gorgeous resort right on the beach with a stunning pool and our own private bungalow, which was by far the best we'd had and the most expensive. (We even chose an hotel run by am muslim where alcohol was banned in order for us not to be tempted!! ha ha joking, this is all true but we didn't realise untill the first night when i tried ordering a glass of wine with my meal. Oops! A cheeky one wouldn't have hurt would it!) But nope our fate was sealed, we were detoxing if we liked it or not. We could have bought some from the shop but the cheapest bottle of wine was 20 quid, a box of kellogs cornflakes was a fiver, a twix 1.20. The place was extortionate so looked like we were starving as well. We had am lovely couple of days though, it was nice to be back on our own again after the previous fortnight with our friends all the time. We just relaxed by the pool, had a kayaking sesh (where the waves were really choppy and i got sea sick and threw up!) and apart from that we didn't really do much else! We were in bed for 8-9pm both nights where we watched a few movies it were lovely. Yep, all the toxins flushed out of us we're ready to hit Kho Phi Phi. the party island!! Whoop whoop its paaarrrtty time.
