10th March 2010

We got up this morning to rain and it wasn't until we left our room for breakfast that we realised it was cold, not chilly but actually cold. With jumpers on we set off for the bus stop to catch a bus to Oudom Xai our next overnight stop.  The bus wasn’t full when it left the depot but after about an hour we started picking people up in villages.  It then started picking people up with large parcels and the more people it picked up the larger the amount of parcels, bags, quilts, piles of wood, watermelons, they brought with them.  It was so full at one stage that two men got on and had to sit on top of the parcels as there was no room to sit or stand.

The roads were very bad, full of pot holes and really dusty, you could taste the clay even in the bus with all the windows shut.  The dust is so awful that it covers everything, all the trees and bushes are orange with it and every house at the side of the road has orange walls and roofs.  They are working to tarmac the main roads but the progression is slow as they have to keep them open while work continues, and it is hard to lay tarmac while large trucks and buses power past.

We arrived at Oudom Xai only 20min late, not too bad, found a guest house and went in search of food.  The first place we found was a small cafe that served up a tasty buffalo curry which the owner made from scratch and we ate at a table by the side of the road.

We didn’t get to explore this town but from the drive in it looked to be quite a large one.  We get back on the bus tomorrow to a town called Luang Prabang.
