Culture
Entry 5 of 5 | show all | print this entry |
The Japanese culture makes our American culture look like a bunch of pigs. Seriously. There are so many little things that I didn't even realize that I do all the time that are socially taboo here. They don't really eat at all with their fingers. Have you ever tried to eat a chicken wing with chop sticks? It truly is as difficult as it sounds. And when you do eat with your fingers... you're not supposed to lick them. I never really thought about the fact that while eating with my hands, I like my fingers all the time. Think about it... most of us do and it's kinda gross.
Their culture is all about respect. It's very interesting. That's why they bow all the time. (They really do!) When you get a taxi, you aren't allowed to touch the door at all. They open it and then close it by using a lever in the driver seat. You aren't supposed to touch it at all. I think I mentioned how you don't hand people money, you set it down so they can pick it up. They don't talk on their cell phones while using public transportation. In fact, they are supposed to turn them off. Most people do use them to text while they are on the train, but they never ever talk on them.
Renee and I went to Kyoto (capital after 800 AD... for I don't know how long) yesterday to see temples and zen gardens. Today we are going to Nara (capital before 800 AD) for the same thing. Tomorrow, back to Kyoto to see the monkeys and a couple other famous things. Monday we haven't really decided on yet. I also don't need to be to the airport until 4 on Tuesday, so I have some time to bum around then, too.
