Saguaro National Park-A Desert in Springtime
The saguaro cactus is the quintessential cactus-the one we all drew as children and see in cartoons-the tall one with the arms. It also happens to be the state plant (tree?) of Arizona. Who knew a national park dedicated to a single type of cactus could be filled with so much beauty? Well a springtime visit to Saguaro National Park provided us with a surprisingly unique and visually stimulating experience.
The park is just outside of Tucson and is pretty easy to get to, although we could not take our RV and trailer on the 9 mile paved drive through the park. We rode on Bob's motorcycle and took a couple of hours to absorb the beauty of cactus in bloom as well as the wildlife and the majestic Saguaro forest (yes, they call this a forest!). Jackrabbits, lizards, hummingbirds, bees, mule deer, distant mountains, and many different cactus flowers awaited us, posing and ready for digital imaging. I wish I knew all the names of the plants we saw. The pictures tell the story-enjoy!
