Coast Guard Auxiliary Kayak Fund Raiser

My dive shop owner belongs to the Coast Guard Auxiliary here.  Today he had organized a kayak fund raiser so they can buy more equipment, like a defibrillator and such things like that.  Very good items to have for a Coast Guard group.  I was lucky enough to ride along in the support boat.  The long group was going 14 kilometers and the short group was going 11 kilometers.  It was quite windy today so they had to go around the short peninsula to end up at Puerto Galera and then back to Sabang.

All the kayaks had two people except one.  Some of these men (one woman only) had not kayaked in a very long time.  They took off in a group and made it to the first turning point pretty much in a group and then they got spread out as the more experienced and stronger kayakers pulled ahead.  It wasn't a race so it really didn’t matter.  We went on ahead in our boat and set up the refreshment station and then waiting for them to round the corner.

Everyone got to Puerto Galera pretty much together as they had to portage over a small sand bar to get into the harbor at Puerto Galera.  Some fresh fruit and Gatorade or beer or both and then they were back in the kayaks for the return trip.  Only four of the kayaks chose to reverse the trip and do the long route.

We rode with them and the waves were getting higher and higher and the wind was picking up.  These men were working very, very hard.  But it was for an excellent cause and finally the home port was in sight and everyone made it back safely but I think there will be some sore muscles tonight.  For me, it was a nice day out in the boat for a ride.  For the Coast Guard Auxiliary, it was a great cause for needed equipment.
