We rented an apartment in Rome once. It was very much living in the local vernacular. We were next to a police station so no worries about feeling safe. The neighbors would sit on the stoop at night and have coffee. So we thought to do the same in Venice.
We have a very nice two bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor. We have to walk up one flight to reach the small rickety elevator and take it another two flights. there is no air conditioning at the moment so I think it would be miserable in the summer but there in a unit in the apartment so maybe it has just been shut off since it is "fall". There is a small washer so we can do our laundry but we will have to take it up to the terrace and hang it out to dry. It's a lovely place.
So far we have not been able to find a grocery store but the owner told us today where one is so we will have coffee tomorrow. lovely.
The neighborhood is noisy and unfortunately, this time it's tourist noisy, not local neighborhood noisy. It's very close to the Rialto bridge so there are restaurants and bars open quite late. Not the most restful of nights to have some drunk kids singing in the street at 3 a.m. Still, we like it. It's always nice to get into a culture and live somewhat like the locals. gives one an appreciation for your own culture as well and your own connections. Internet here is only on the roof terrace and very slow. I do miss my high speed.
