Today is our first day of class. Ray is in class Principiante II and I am in Principiante I. Ray's teacher is Theresa and my teacher is Roberto. We are changing our class time to 7-11 instead of 9-1. We will start together at desayunó (breakfast) and then separate into our classes. It will be cooler and we will have more time to do what we want and maybe some sightseeing. They seem to be very flexible. If we want to take a day off to sightsee we can make the time up in the next 4 classes. Our classes are one on one. We have a 15 minute break half way through. It is really pretty cool.
Roberto is very patient, soft spoken, and will explain what I don't understand in English and Spanish. Ray is thrilled with his teacher. Ray said today we are 5 percent through with the classes.
Last night we met a young couple who were from Boston
Playa Samara is such a magical place. Today we went to lunch at a beach restaurant; we were the oldest ones in the restaurant. The youth that were there were watching soccer and very involved in the game. Scott would have fit right in. Most of the males are surfers. Our waiter was originally from NY City, then Miami and for the past 2 ½ year Costa Rica. We met a nice couple from Holland at our pool today. They had just finished a 12 day tour going to 5 different places in Costa Rica. They said they would get up every morning at 6:00, eat breakfast at 7:00 and then be off on the tour. The tour has left them now and they are taking 3 more days to rest and recover from the tour before heading home. ;-) I have to say I love how laid back it is here. Yesterday we ate at a Restaurant called Lizie's. It has free WIFI. Christopher, who owns it is originally from Canada, moved here 6 years ago, and opened Lizies 3 months ago. As you can see, people are very friendly. They say if you are here a week you know almost everyone in town. We found out the town has around 600 residents not 6,000 as Ray originally thought
Hasta luego, I will write more tomorrow.
El martes, junio 10th
Last night we had dinner at Lizies and right before we left we had two of the hardest rains I have ever experienced. They only lasted about 10 minutes each but it was pretty amazing. I guess I did more than that amount of rain in Florida about two years ago but it lasted all day and my plane was grounded until the next day. We have only had two rains here, both at night and I hope this continues since this is their rainy season.
Another beautiful day in paradise! I think I love Costa Rica better than Phuket, Thailand. Yes, that is Carolyn speaking. It is so beautiful. I'll try to include a picture of my classroom and see if you don't agree.
Well, as usual, we have packed way too many clothes. I haven't figured out if they have a post office or I'd send most of my things home. This is so hard, three meals a day, a wonderful beach, a beautiful pool, a fun class, and a wonderful husband
Ray and I have decided that this is the Cocoa of about 1900 only with surfers and youth. We didn't have all this fun when we were in college.
Today we had 4.2 kilos of laundry done, which is approximately 10lbs, washed, dried, folder and all completed in about 4hours for about 4200 colones or $8.50. We just had to walk across the street from the hotel. Pretty amazing! Tonight we sat at the beach, had 3 mixed drinks between us (Ray a margarita and a tequila sunrise, and I had a rum and coke), and split a brochette for $13.00.
El miercoles e jueves , junio 11th
Yesterday was a lovely day. I was feeling a little under the weather for half the day. We had classes in the morning from 7-11. They also moved a small refrig into our room yesterday so we can keep drinks cool. Yesterday we walked into a little town named Comgrehal, it is about half mile from Samara. It is called the little town of crabs. There is also a little town beyond that that we will try to find that has a beach and turtles come in and lay their eggs
Today is our first day rain and it started about 2:00pm. It is very humid right before the rain starts and during the first part of the rain. I just went in and took off my tank top and put on my bathing suit top for coolness. Ray and I are sitting on our balcony working on homework. Yesterday I probably worked at least 4+ hours on homework. Today, I have already worked 2 hours. It isn't that hard it is just time consuming. I am not speedy. We walked down town, (a block over ;-)) and tried to buy me some note cards but the store is closed, or no longer occupied. Not a great deal new, same old, same old. Oh this was pretty amazing tho. Yesterday, we were at happy hour at the Locanda Restaurant on the beach, when this man came by to promote his horse riding business. We were just talking. He was from Venezuela and went to high school in New York in a private military high school across the river from West Point. Then he went to Jacksonville Florida were he went to the University of Jacksonville. He went there for one year when he found out about the Univ of Fla. He went there for 4 years. Go Gators
I'd better get back to my español.
For the rest of today I am not going to do any Spanish. I will get back on task tomorrow. I think my brain is on overload. I have crammed so much into it. Tomorrow, Ray and I will explore the surrounding area on foot and work on our Spanish.
Euro Cup is a big deal here. There are a lot of Europeans. All the beach bars have TV's on with the games playing. The young men are at the bars, the young women are on the beach, and the older men and women are at the hotel bars. This is a single mans paradise, there are so many beautiful, young girls. We met some from Ireland that just finished Trinity University. They are on vacation and will return to graduate. There are people from Holland, and Germany. We have met another couple from Holland today. There is also a high school group from Colorado who are spending the week here learning or improving their Spanish. I think they are also learning to surf along with other activities.
Sorry, the Mac/PC world, I will upload photos later. They are on my Mac side and I don't have a flash drive with me to get them to the PC side.
