Umvuvu camp (bush camp) on Xua Island

Today we crossed the border into Botswana! After crossing the border (which was a relatively quick affair), we came to the river crossing where a free ferry goes back and forth taking vehicles and people.  Unfortunately, as we are a big truck, we got pushed back down the queue a little and waited over an hour to get a spot on the ferry.  Once across the river, we head to Umvuvu camp and meet our makoro guides.  Kieren and Luca stay behind with the truck as it needs some work, so it's just us, Vesh and the guides.

We've already organised our bags for two days worth of clothes so we take them, plus our sleeping gear and tents to the makoros and set sail in the Okavango Delta.  It's absolutely stunning.  The flooded delta is filled with water lilies and other flowers and it's a really serene and peaceful trip.  Unfortunately, we don't see any animals but we weren't exactly being quiet so I guess it was to be expected.

We arrive at bush camp and set up our tents.  We are warned that elephants and hippos frequently come onto this island so we needed to always be aware of this, and only go to the toilet in the middle of the night if absolutely necessary and should always be accompanied.  It's slightly worrying and exciting at the same time!

We leave Vesh and get back in the makoros for a sunset cruise, but we're actually only out for about 10 minutes (even Vesh was surprised to see us back so quickly!).  Dinner tonight is Chile con carne and afterwards we cook marshmallows over the fire.  I'm knackered so it's an early night for me - 8:30pm.
