We have been lucky enough to visit South East Asia a few times prior to our trip. Although we have thoroughly enjoyed our time here, there isn't the same novelty and excitement of our time in South America – therefore our 5 favourite places are the same as they were after 200 days. Instead we are doing our 5 favourite places in South East Asia!
5 favourite places…
1) Elephant Sanctuary - Laos 1) Nam Tha – Laos
2) Perhentian Islands - Malaysia 2) Perhentian Islands - Malaysia
3) Redang Island - Malaysia 3) Luang Prabang - Laos
4) Baliscag Island - Philippines 4) Baliscag Island - Philippines
5) Saigon - Vietnam 5) Redang - Malaysia
Number of Hostels we have stayed in…133
Favourite Country in South East Asia
Laos and the Philippines – both still well off the tourist map and we have no idea why. Laos feels like its 50 years behind the rest of the word and the Philippines has incredible beaches and friendly, happy people. After visiting the Philippines we are amazed more people don’t visit for holidays – the beaches alone blow places like Thailand out of the water!
Number of photos taken…
A mind boggling 19399 (or 71.25 Gb) or a photo every 22 minutes, night and day – we are slowing down (just a little). All 3 cameras we own are now broken in one way or another – over use perhaps?
Means of Transport so far…26 – plane, coach, bus, minibus, 4x4, lorry, taxi, hire car, motor bike, motorized trike, bicycle, ferry, canoe, raft, rickshaw, speed boat, underground, monorail, luge, trike, jeepney, elephant, rubber tube, ferry, sand board & body board!
South East Asia has certainly been more relaxing than South America – there has been much more lounging on the beach and taking it easy as there are less sights to see. Unfortunately there have also been more diseases and we have visited 4 hospitals in 3 countries thanks to mosquitoes and chemical spraying bugs. All we can say is thank God for insurance! The bad news is after Hong Kong comes India – Paul thinks I might have several more stays in hospital before the trip is over although I think it’s Paul’s turn to get ill next time!
And so there are only 65 days left… or so we thought. Our useless, incompetent estate agent who let our apartment made a mistake that means we are homeless for a month when we get back. We are thinking of spending more time on the road than originally planned. I wonder if we can make an additional month last another year? Neither of us is ready to return to the real world! Here’s hoping for a lottery win and a 1000 Not Out blog!
