After 3 weeks on the road, it was time to treat ourselves to a little R&R.  After a 4 hour bus journey from Montevideo, we were dropped off at the side of a deserted highway.  The only clue to Cabo Polonio's existence was a couple of huge 4x4 trucks with raised suspension.  After a bumpy 7km ride over nothing but sand dunes Cabo Polonio came into sight.  Cabo is a protected peninsular consisting of sand dunes, wooden shacks with two long white beaches which stretch for miles.  After we jumped off the truck a man came and showed us to some available accommodation, not too dissimilar to a shed & it looked like he had made it himself. It had no running water (just a well outside) or electricity but the view made up for all this - unspoilt rolling dunes leading to the Atlantic Ocean.
We spent the next three days doing absolutely nothing, just lazing in hammocks and on the 'deck', eating lots, drinking beer, watching the sun set in the evening and shooting stars at night, just what we needed!
After 3 days our time was up though as was our time in Uruguay. A couple of buses and a boat later & we were back in Buenos Aires. Uruguay has been a very nice surprise - Colonia & Montevideo were nice enough but Cabo was an absolute breath of fresh air. It has recharged our batteries & our next stop is Patagonia. One our lasting impressions will be the cars in Uruguay - this is where all cars come to die. We have never seen so many old rust buckets from clapped out Cortina's to Cheverolets & Fords from the 1950's. Definitely no MOT required in Uruguay - just like South East London!
