Well, I guess it's tax time back home in the USA... Down here in Paraguay it's Chipa Time!Chipa. Wow, it's EVERYWHERE! I've been hearing about chipa since we arrived in Paraguay way back in February. It only exists in Paraguay, along with terere and Guarani of course.

I just uploaded 25 pictures, some with little stories attached. I still feel like I have a million stories to share with you all. Things just continue to be new and different. I think I'm over the culture shock, more or less.

I visited my new home last week. I think it's going to be a great place to live for the next two years. My casita is lacking quite a few things and is pretty dirty and dark, but my landlord/contact/school director has a wonderful attitude and wants to help me fix it up Altar from the 1620s in Ypacarai

. I was presented informally to all of the teachers and directors of my new site because they were having a monthly meeting while I was in town. There are about 13-14 schools that are in my area. I was also presented to the classes at my 'head school' which is about a five minute walk from my casita. The kids were adorable of course, like kids everywhere. I'll definitely take some pictures to share with you all. I do feel like my site will be perfect because there are quite a few options for my work. The schools are all within walking/biking distance from the house. There is a teachers' college nearby in Santani/San Estanislao, and so I might be working with student teachers. My host family's house and my little casita are located on a main route. The bus to Santani passes by about every hour. I can also jump on a bus to get back to Asuncion right in front of my house. I feel sort of confused about what exactly I'll be doing, but for the first two or three months I will be mainly observing and getting to know the community.

My pals are waiting for me to finish up so that we can go eat lunch before doing some shopping. I'll end here by saying that I'm feeling good and am still happy to be here.

Very good to hear from you! Chipa, huh...sounds a lot more fun than Tax Time.....It's spring here now, with the grass rapidly greening. Still snow on the mountains and it snowed today, Easter! That's a first for a Californian. Starting to look forward to summer in Sandpoint, with old car shows, sand castle competition, summer music festival and friends and family visiting....
Sent you a package but forgot to enclose a letter. Will write soon. love, Kathleen
