Where I stayed
I went over to Sonia's place on Friday night and we drank some wine and went to bed relatively early given that our flight was at 6am on Sat morning. Her husband Cade was kind enough to give us a lift to the airport which saved us about $30 so that was good! Then again, I don't really think she left him much of a choice! ;)
The flight was very smooth, no issues whatsoever. We got to Melbourne around 8:30am and made our way to our hotel: Batman's Hill! We had gotten a pretty good deal on the room which they described as a 'double-single room'... well, we got what we paid for! lol Showed up in the room to find 2 single beds on wheel and the tiniest bathroom i've ever seen (apart from Celine's pics from Asia!)! I really can't complain though because we were literally just there to sleep, and it was really clean and everything.
We headed to Richmond, one of the areas of Melbourne, to meet up with one of Sonia's old schoolmates for breakfast. Him and his gf just purchased this REALLY nice modern-looking house in this upcoming neighbourhood. We took a tram to meet them, stopped at a bakery to buy some goodies, and headed to their house for breakfast. They were very lovely people, had a great tlme! They hooked us up with some tram daily passes and some amazing coffee from PNG, yum!
After breakfast, Sonia and I made our way to CHurch and Chapel Street which is just kilometers of shops and stores. There are tons of outlets as well, so you can find some pretty good deal! I was quite reasonable and only bought 3 shirts, all on sale! :) We made our way to an italian cafe and grabbed some lunch, before heading over to St-Kilda's.
St-Kilda's is by the beach/ocean and has palm trees everywhere, very gorgeous! We stopped at Luna Park for a bit (amusement park, but more aimed at kids - no crazy rides) and then walked around the beach for hours! We stopped for some more food by the beach with some beer. The weather was very nice (sweater and jeans) so it made the day very enjoyable. We also stopped at Cold Rock... YUM! For those that have never heard about it, Cold Rock is paradise for ice cream lovers!! You basically pick from 15-20 different kinds of ice cream, and then you pick what you'd want in it... they have just about every chocolate bar imaginable, candies like gummy bears and sour patch, chocolate and caramel sauce, nuts, fruits, etc. Once you pick what you want, they put the ice cream on this metal plate (rock) and smash up whatever you picked and mix it in your ice cream... yum!
After our afternoon at St-Kilda's we made our way back into town and quickly changed before going to meet up with an old coworker of Sonia's (and about 15 other people we didn't know). We met up with them at 6pm, and all of them were literally all sooooo drunk at that point that we had to go to another bar at 7pm when some of them got cut off. THis is because they went to see a rugby game in the afternoon in a box with all you can drink... trouble! We ended up going to about 3 different bars/pubs before 11pm, saw a lot of places which was good! Met some pretty nice people as well! Finally, Sonia and I left and went to this club with this live band which was realllly good! We stayed there until the band finished their set around 2am and then went back to the hotel and passed out after a very LONG day!
Sunday morning, we got up early enough and went to get a massive breakfast in another area of Melbourne. Melbourne is full of alley ways all filled with cafes and shops, so it makes it quite interesting to walk around! After some well (or not so well) deserved bacon and eggs, we walked down to Southgate which had really nice views and, once again, more cafes and shops. There was also a market open so we went through that. We had a late lunch at this cafe on the 2nd floor overlooking the river and the Southgate area which was pretty cool.
We then went to a DFO (direct factory outlet) and did a bit more shopping, but by this point we were so tired that even trying on clothes seemed like too much effort, so we mostly jsut window shopped! We had issues when booking our flights (don't even get me started!), so I ended up on a flight with Tiger Airways at 8:30pm and Sonia's flight was with Virgin BLue at 5:30. Given that the airport is out of town, we cabbed back together to the airport around 4:30pm and I hung out at the airport for hours. I grabbed some dinner and bought a book, so at least time went by pretty quickly. I also met this really nice girl who was going to be on the same flight back to Canberra and chatted with her for an hour or so... small world when I ran into her at my client's yesterday as she works there! :)
Overall had a lovely weekend! Melbourne is a very nice city! Overall though, I have to admit that my heart is still in Sydney.. :) That's it for now, hope you guys all had a great weekend!!!
Wish you were here!
