So following the decision  by Jo & myself to make a road trip to Canberra for Sat and Sun 21st & 22nd of June I was looking forward to a quiet friday night in, in anticipation of the early morning drive to Canberra!  Clearly that attempt failed and we totally slept it out the next morning and ended up dragging ourselves to the car hire shop early afternoonish on Sat to collect our hire car!!

After a dodgy start though and despite arriving at a late hour in Canberra we actually did get to see a lot.  Canberra reminded me of Washingon in lots of way's in that there was lots of wide open spaces and long boulevards and obviously the government buildings and other locations of national interest.  I really liked it maybe becasue I didn't have too high expectations after the general slagging it had gotten from the Aussie's themselves!

On Sat we made it to the War memorial and saw the Closing Ceremony where a bag-piper played a Scotish lament and then we sped up the Black Mountain to visit the Telstra viewing tower which over looks the whole city from a height.  Dinner and drinks in King O' Malley's and a general sneering of the "hip" clientele in there rounded up our evening in Canberra.

On Sunday we managed to get out of bed at a reasonable hour and went straight to the Sport's Institute which was brill and would have been even better if we had gotten to see some of the athlete's training.  They except kids there into some of their programmes as young as 7 or 8!  After hearing the training regime Jo and I both decided that a sporting career is not for us!  we then took in the AFL game between Sydney Swans and the Melbourne Demons where met some very socialbe Aussie boys who were drinking heavily and only too happy to explian  the rules of the game to us.  Needless to say all we were interested in was cheering on Tadgh Kinnelly!  We flew off after to take in the market, The National Mint, Parliament House and the National Library!  Tourism exactly how we like it - informative and short!
