The Great Ocean Road

After enjoying what Melbourne had to offer we found it time to get back in the tent and on the road again. Hired a car and headed out south east to the Great Ocean Road. Had our first experience of conservation free camp sites in Lorne with perfumed au naturel dump toilets! The campsites were all full due to school holidays (apparently that's what Aussies do - and why the hell not?) So Sal had to do without the security of a camp spot in a campsite, we welcomed the outdoors again! The site was au naturel all right, basically a clearing had been cut in a forest (which had all the animals there too). We met a Koala moving from one eucalyptus tree to another. It took him at least ten minutes, Sal was fascinated, but didn't want to get too close just in case (we were told the males can sometimes be dangerous in the zoo) so we got a few photos in and named him Keith. Sal was in love...
We did the coastal drive which was completely gorgeous in places but most of the towns along the route left us wanting a little more. The sun did appear for us at the Twelve Apostles but the wind blew...great rocky sea scape...pretty seaside towns, yet often a town would consist of five to ten buildings and a 'locals' bar - not a great deal to do so we often continued driving.
We drove through the Grampian Mountain range but were met with miserable weather so we saw very little. And the weather continued so we made an executive decision to head to Ballarat which was just a modest industrial town a few hours west of Melbourne. There were at least cafes, bars and well, something to do there while it rained. We Had a 'Gold' experience in the Ballarat cinema...reclining chairs, wine and maltesers...do they do it in England? They should. Saw PS, I love you and Sally cried the whole way through!! We worked our way back to Melbourne, one last night there before jumping on the plane to New Zealand. We were very excited!
