We had booked a place which had been recommended by a hotel in Saigon. The hotel was OK, beach view, a/c and a private terrace. But $17 which after what we'd gotten in Saigon for $11 seemed a bit steep. We spent the afternoon walking along Mui Ne, it is basically just one street that has a 6km strip of sand. Palm trees, sand, guesthouses, Internet cafes and restaurant but absolutely nothing else. We found a nice place called Sunshine Beach Apartments for $20 but we got free breakfast, a much brighter and better furnished room, TV, minibar and the room came with free DVDs and a coconut garden to sit in!
There is really nothing much to do in Mui Ne. As it's about 3 hours away from Saigon, it seemed to be a place to relax and get away from the city for a little r & r. We did just that. We only had planned on staying for 2, maybe 3 days, but we ended up staying for 6 nights! After travelling for 7 weeks and visiting city after city, it was just the tonic!
We ate seafood everyday for very little. We found a lovely family run restaurant on the beach called Nam Tong. The food was cheap, plastic chairs but you could sit on the beach at a table, order food and drinks and watch the fishing boats out at sea. We went back every evening after that - it was so cheap! They had fresh squid, tiger prawns (about 6 inch ones, none of this Tesco 1-2 inch tiger prawn business!), barracuda, tuna, lobster, eel, and much more! Yum!!
Our days at Mui Ne consisted of laying on beach chairs on the beach, watching kite and wind surfers going up and down in the strong sea breeze, getting some sun, enjoying a fresh mixed fruit shake (75p) and relaxing. Lovely! We'd come off the beach usually at about 5pm, get showered etc, visit the Internet cafe (20p per hour - although they were dreadfully slow) then get some food before retiring to our room for a DVD!
The sand dunes were fun as you could hire pieces of plastic sheeting and slide down the dunes!! We got very sandy, as it was a hot sweaty day, we both tumbled off our sheets and rolled ourselves in the sand. After 5 days of doing nothing it was nice to get out and do something.
