First thing this morning is Kogelberg. If Carlos could have stretched the day yesterday we would have done it yesterday already. A World Heritage site. The dirt road leads one into a still world with mountains on either side. For the first time in years I saw a "sewejaartjie". A flower that is indigenous to the cape but we have not seen it anywhere else. When we were small we used to pick them for my mom.
The rocks looked as if they were placed in position along the river. Similar to “Stonehenge” but not on that scale. There are hiking trails and one spot that offer accommodation. If we could continue along this route it would take one to Grabow but as usual at some point one has to turn back because it is private property.
Driving back towards Bettiesbaai we stopped to take a photo of the Elephant rock. This rock resembles an elephant when the sun hits it just right. Hope the photo is clear.
Next up was Disa Kloof and the botanical gardens. Tom and I are both great fans of botanical gardens. This park in particular has gone into too much trouble to give as much info as possible about the plants and their uses. It was very interesting to read and touch and smell the various plant types. The protea's once again, “out of this world”. We took a bit of a walk to see Disa Kloof. I remember this from young. The Disa – if I am not mistaken – is a type of orchid that is found in the Kloof. We did not get to go up the kloof or see the Disa. The new walkway leads only to a waterfall on the left of the park. The actual Disa Kloof as I remember it is the high one to the right. Al the same, it was a lovely walk and the scenery was worth it. The “coke” water in the river had foam on the surface that made interesting curves. In one of the photos one can see the shape of a bird’s head. We did not linger as we wanted to get to Cape Point by end of day. Why am I feeling that we rushing through all this?

We were elated to see that the Hotel was fixed up and looking good. The last time we came to see it, it was looking rather sad. They have done a lot and are still busing doing a lot to improve it. Yet, keeping the original look. I missed Lucia’s huge flower arrangements in the lounge and reception area. Patricio’s office is still the same and so is the Bar. My room at the top on the left of the main building as well as the honeymoon suites are in the process of being changed. The dining room seem bigger to me. Was nice to show Tom.
I had high hopes to go greet Tannie Charlotte in Grabow but time was running out and we pushed on. Unfortunately when we got to the lookout at Sir Lowry’s Pass it was very hazy
We drove through Gordon’s Bay and Strand. One can hardly get to the beach front any more. All has been built up and closed off as it all belongs to estates now. At least the last little bit is still open.
On to Muizenburg via the coastal road. The day visitor’s facilities along the way (lots of it) are damaged and neglected. Muizenburg is another story. Busy and full of life. By now I had gotten used to sitting on the passenger window holding on for dear life while taking photos on the run. In Cape Agulhas a cop told me to get into the vehicle!! OOoops. But else there would hardly be any pics.
Fish Hoek and Simon’stown. Such a lovely old world feel. Love the buildings and the activity. Would not mind spending a while in the area to “sniff” around properly. Simon’s town is home to a naval base. When popping into the harbor area the marines were just having a shift change
Tom was very taken with the Cape and the diversity in landscape and setting. KZN was looking very boring by now. heheee
We will be spending the night at Imhoff Caravan Park in Kommetjie. We arrived at last light and did not get to see much of Kommetjie. Instead of making dinner we decided to go for takeaways. When that did not look appetizing we stopped at a Pizza place. Only after sitting down we realized that the Pizza place closed down and now it was a burger joint. The waitress was a tiny young girl. She was so excited to tell us about the “gourmet night” and to offer us the best of the spread. It sounded great and besides, there was no other place to eat. The gourmet menu offered stuff like brie, pepper dew and rocket sauce or Blue cheese, pesto and fresh basil sauce, or egg, bacon and cheese etc. All for the bargain price of R36.00. We loved the food and soon it was all over and to bed we went as it was starting to drizzle and it was Brrrrrrr COLD.
